The federal government is pushing forward with the second wave of financial support for fast broadband across the United Kingdom. It comes in spite of the fact that no technologies or firms have yet been selected for unusual pilot areas allocated to test how to roll out next-generation broadband to secluded areas.
New bids are actually being invited for a further £50m. The federal government has promised to make the United Kingdom the best location for fast broadband in Europe by year 2015. The £50 million will be made available to local officials around the United Kingdom.
"This is very much a locally managed procedure and we support bids from all local folks with plans for improving broadband within their local region,” Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne said.
Local councils attempting to take advantage of the newest tranche of funding will have to apply through the Broadband Delivery United Kingdom. The federal government estimated that the funding would support a further 800,000 houses to benefit from next-generation broadband.
