Sprint Nextel increasing smartphone data plan costs

Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) is raising the costs of their unlimited data service for smartphone strategy by $10 per month, it is for every new smartphone postpaid plans starting Jan. 30.

Sprint said the cost will allow it to preserve its wireless network to satisfy the demand for data solutions. Sprint stated its smartphone clients use ten times more data than its standard function phone customers. In previous summer AT&T (NYSE: T) Mobility tainted its costing intends to protect its network from heavy data use by introducing a tiered pricing structure--$25 for just 2 GB of data also $15 for 200 MB.

Sprint's additional $10 formerly only applied for WiMAX-enabled Smartphones, the HTC Evo Shift, Samsung Epic and also the HTC Evo.

Cristi Allen Sprint spokeswoman told FierceWireless how the change indicates that carrier won't go ahead and take route AT&T with others have on data prices. "At this time, we're devoted to our unlimited pricing philosophy," she said.

Existing consumers will not be required to pay the increased monthly fee.
